How can I see the contents of a file in a network folder with php?

Question

I am on windows with Xamp and from that server I can network access a file from another server. What I need is like PHP can see the contents of the file on the other server. I am validating if I see the file but it returns false:

var_dump(file_exists('\\SERVERNAME\FOLDER\SUBFOLDER\FOLDER\THEFILE.txt'));

Also try with \\ and \ but there's no way I find that the file exists.

What's the right way to view that file?
